straightforward realistic tools for teaching children to read

Biography

The author, Juanita Cutler, was inspired to create this system in the late 1950's.  Reading Rudolf Flesch's "Why Johnny Can't Read" she began to use the lists of phonetic words provided in this book to work with her own children.  R. Flesch also recommended the reading set "Hay-Wingo".  She used this set to teach her 1st grade son to read and between the beginning of the school year and December this child had been elevated to a second grade reading level.  At that point the school asked her to help some other students that were having trouble with reading.  Her experiences with these children led her to realize that the "Hay-Wingo" system did not address the needs of the truly beginning reader and that the students needed smaller and simpler steps to progress more naturally.

At this point, Juanita began to  prepare her own system.  She would use the classic black bound 'composition' notebooks to prepare 'primers' for each of her students.  Personalized with their name within the text and customized for their special needs.  The labor intensive preparation for each child limited the number of readers she could help.

Over the years, Juanita continued to teach her own nine children to read at very early ages, often advancing them in reading and consequently in other subjects to the point that the school district would advance her children into higher grades.  She also tutored many neighborhood children and students referred to her by the local school districts.  She studied the Montessori method of educating children and found that her system closely resembles the theories that Montessori uses, self paced, self motivated student activities.

In the more recent decades she prepared primers in a format that allowed the system to be photocopied for each of her grandchildren.  She obtained college degrees, traveled around the country and eventually returned to her first love, educating children.

She prepared her sets of primers for a commercial printer but has run out of inventory each time a batch of primer sets was made available.  Her quick turnover and constant waiting lists prompted her children to launch this website and begin to manage her business in such a way that will provide for a constant inventory availability and better pricing structure.
